1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

Producers & Adjusters - 24 hours biennially

Limited Lines - 10 hours biennially

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the license issuance date, biennially.

Effective 4/17/18, all individual licenses will be set to expire on the last day of the license holder's birth month. This will not affect continuing education credits or other requirements.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

At least 50% of requirement must be in classroom or classroom equivalent courses (for all licenses)

For All Licenses:

Ethics
2 hrs - Producers, Adjusters and Limited Lines must complete 2 hrs in Ethics/Consumer Protection as part of the total requirement.

For Life & Health Producers:

Annuity Suitability
4/8 hrs - Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour Annuity Suitability Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products. Following the initial 4-hour Annuity Training, all producers who continue to sell annuity products must complete 8 hours of ongoing Texas Annuity CE courses every license period thereafter.

Long-Term Care Partnership
8/4 hrs - Producers must complete an initial 8-hour Long-Term Care (LTC) Partnership Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating Long-Term Care products/policies. After completing the initial requirement, producers must complete a 4-hour ongoing LTC training, due every renewal thereafter.

Medicare-Related Products
8/4 hrs - Producers must complete 8 hours of professional training prior to selling Medicare Advantage plans and/or Medicare Part D. An additional 4 hours of Medicare-related product CE is required every license renewal period thereafter.

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Flood
3 hrs - Property/Casualty and Personal lines producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on NFIP Flood Insurance Certification Training prior to selling flood insurance policies.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

CARRYOVER HOURS:

Carryover hours are not allowed.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

Non-residents are exempt if in good standing in resident state
Individuals who have been licensed in Texas continuously for 20 or more years with no gaps in licensure longer than 90 days may apply for an exemption
Extensions or exemptions for good cause may be granted by the Education Coordinator
Exemptions must be requested in writing
A producer may be exempt for other CE but is not exempt from the Certification course nor the associated CE for the programs they may be performing in the acts of an agent (Small Employer, Annuities, LTCP, Medicare-related Products).

2. Register for and Complete Courses

Once you have determined the renewal requirements for your license, you can register for courses. Each course has an associated credit type; when registering for courses, select courses with credit types that will help to fulfill the renewal requirements for your license.

PreLicenseTraining.com offers webinar, online, and self study courses for Texas. You can register for courses under the Continuing Education menu at CE Courses.

You must fulfill the course requirements for each of the courses to have them reported.

Classroom and webinar course completions are based off of attendance and participation and do not require a completion exam. You must be present for the full duration of the course and be active and attentive throughout to receive credit.
Online and Self Study courses are self-paced. You must review the course material and pass the Certification Exam at the end to receive credit.

MONITOR REQUIREMENTS:

Online and self study exams do not require a monitor.

REPORTING METHOD:

Once a course has been completed, the completion must be reported to the state. PreLicenseTraining.com will report the course completions to Sircon/Vertafore. Producers must keep the original certificates of completion on file for 4 years. Proof of compliance must be provided only if requested by the TDI for auditing purposes.

3. File a Renewal Application

Once you have satisfied the renewal requirements for your license, you can file a renewal application at www.sircon.com.
