1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of the licensee's birth month, biennially.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers & Adjusters must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as part of the total requirement.

Law
3 hrs - Producers & Adjusters must complete 3 hrs on Oregon statutes and administrative rules, including recent updates, as part of the total requirement.

For Life & Health Producers:

Long-Term Care
8/4 hrs - Producers must complete an initial 8-hour Long-Term Care (LTC) Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating Long-Term Care products/policies. After completing the initial requirement, producers must complete a 4-hour ongoing LTC training, due on the completion date of the 8-hour training, every 24 months thereafter.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

Carryover hours are not allowed.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a reporting period.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

  • Non-residents (except for LTC requirement)
  • Non-resident Adjusters are not exempt from CE requirement  You can provide course credit taken in another state, so long as the course is also approved in Oregon.  Licensee will still have to complete 24 hours of CE, even if home state requires fewer hours.
  • Individuals holding limited lines licenses for which an exam is not required
  • Individuals who are retired, are at least 58 years of age, have been licensed for at least 10 years, are authorized to transact life insurance only, and will be servicing existing policies only (exemption must be requested)

2. Register for and Complete Courses

Once you have determined the renewal requirements for your license, you can register for courses. Each course has an associated credit type; when registering for courses, select courses with credit types that will help to fulfill the renewal requirements for your license.

PreLicenseTraining.com offers webinar, online, and self study courses for Oregon. You can register for courses at CE Courses.

You must fulfill the course requirements for each of the courses to have them reported.

  • Classroom and webinar course completions are based off of attendance and participation and do not require a completion exam. You must be present for the full duration of the course and be active and attentive throughout to receive credit.
  • Online and Self Study courses are self-paced. You must review the course material and pass the Certification Exam at the end to receive credit.*

Important Notice:  The Oregon Insurance Division states that producers may not complete more than 8 hours of CE credit in one day.  For example, any course that is approved for 9-16 hours of credit will take a minimum of 2 days to complete.  An course approved for 17-24 hours will take a minimum of 3 days to complete.

MONITOR REQUIREMENTS:

*Self-study (books) final exams are required to be closed book and proctored by a state-registered proctor or a third party who is a librarian, state or community college representative, certified public accountant (CPA), or attorney.  Online interactive course exams do not require a monitor.
