1. Review the State Requirements

In order to renew your insurance license, you must complete the required continuing education hours for the lines of insurance that you are licensed in. All of the hours must be completed and reported prior to your license renewal date to avoid a lapse in your license.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

Total Hours

24 hours biennially for Producers

Compliance Renewal Date

Renewal date is the last day of the licensee's birth month, biennially.

You may also need to take specific courses or earn specific credit types to renew your license. These course completions will count toward the total hour requirement.

LINE-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

At least 18 hours must be in license held. If multi-licensed, any course is allowed.

For All Licenses:

Ethics
3 hrs - Producers must complete 3 hrs of Ethics as part of the total requirement. Excess Ethics will not count toward the 18 hours of line-specific courses.

For Life & Health Producers:

Annuity Suitability
4 hrs - Producers must complete a one-time 4-hour Annuity Suitability Certification Training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating annuity products.

Long-Term Care
16 hrs - Producers must complete 16 hours of initial Long-Term Care (LTC) training of prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC products/policies.

  • 8 hours cover general Long-Term Care Certification Training (online or self-study allowed).
  • 8 hours cover topics specific to Long-Term Care Partnership (classroom or webinar only).

5 hrs - Producers must complete a 5-hour LTC refresher course every 24 months thereafter. (classroom or webinar only).

For Property & Casualty Producers:

Flood
3 hrs - Property/Casualty producers must complete a one-time 3-hour course on NFIP Flood Insurance Certification Training prior to selling flood insurance policies.

Homeowners
3 hrs - Property/Casualty or Personal Lines producers must complete 3 hours of homeowners insurance coverage CE, biennially.

Claims-Made Policies
2 hrs - Producers wanting to sell claims-made policies must complete a one-time 2 hour course on claims-made policies prior to selling.

There are also additional rules about how the course hours can be applied.

CARRYOVER HOURS:

A maximum of 12 hours may be carried over to the next renewal period as long as they were completed with 120 days prior to the compliance deadline.

COURSE REPETITION:

Courses may not be taken more than once in a two-year period.  Completion dates must be at least 24 months apart.

If you meet any of criteria below, you may be exempt from the continuing education requirements.

EXEMPTIONS:

  • Newly licensed producers are exempt for the first compliance period
  • Nonresidents (must comply with the LTC training requirement to market LTC products)
  • Producers licensed for only one or more of the following lines:  Professional Bail Bondsperson, Title, Credit, Crop Hail, Limited Insurance Representative/Travel Ticket, HMO, Non Profit Hospital Surgical Medical

2. Register for and Complete Courses

Once you have determined the renewal requirements for your license, you can register for courses. Each course has an associated credit type; when registering for courses, select courses with credit types that will help to fulfill the renewal requirements for your license.

You must fulfill the course requirements for each of the courses to have them reported.

  • Classroom and webinar course completions are based on attendance and participation and do not require an exam. You must be present for the full duration of the course and be active and attentive throughout to receive credit.
  • Online and Self Study courses are self-paced. You must review the course material and pass the Certification Exam at the end to receive credit.*

MONITOR REQUIREMENTS:

*Online and self study exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party (a person with no family or financial relationship).

REPORTING METHOD:

Once a course has been completed, the completion must be reported to the state. PreLicenseTraining.com will report the course completions to Sircon.


3. File a Renewal Application

Once you have satisfied the renewal requirements for your license, you can file a renewal application at www.sircon.com.
